Fermented Skincare: Here’s What you Need To Know!

READING TIME: 5 MINUTES

When I hear “fermentation” my mind immediately goes to things like kimchi, kombucha, and yogurt. Did you know that there’s also fermented skincare? Fermented skincare products are very common in places such as Korea and Japan. However, the power of fermentation is becoming increasingly popular in skincare products in the U.S. as well! I’ve recently been trying out a fermented skincare brand called Ferver Skincare. Below you’ll find my thoughts on the products but first, let’s talk about fermentation and its benefits in skincare.

What is fermentation?

The long answer according to the dictionary: fermentation is the chemical breakdown of a substance by bacteria, yeasts, or other microorganisms into acids, gases, or alcohol, in the absence of oxygen.

The long, but easier to understand, answer: fermentation is the breakdown of ingredients, such as sugar or yeast, into smaller ingredients. This can include amino acids, organic acids, and antioxidants.

These smaller ingredients are more readily available and can be better absorbed by the skin.

You may already be familiar with some of the most popular fermented skincare ingredients like lactic acid, probiotics, and fruit acids/AHAs.

My Experience with ferver skincare

Ferver is a skincare brand that harnesses the power of fermentation to create clean skincare that actually works. Back in December I was given some products for a collaboration over on Instagram. Since then, I’ve been giving them a test drive.

They currently offer 10 products and I’ve tried 5 of them.

Cleanser

1. Fermented Black Tea Cleansing Milk: This lightweight cleanser is formulated with ingredients such as fermented black tea, safflower oil, glycerin, and chamomile. It’s perfect for use in the morning or as a second cleanse. I’ve also used it at night during a single cleanse. My skin is always left feeling clean, soft, and supple.

2. Fermented Enzyme Acid Radiance Mask: After cleansing, I followed up with this mask. The fermented lactic acid in this mask claims to provide 4 times the exfoliating power of traditional AHAs. At the same time, it is formulated to be gentler on the skin.  It also contains other powerhouse ingredients such as turmeric (anti-inflammatory) and red algae (antioxidant). This mask has a subtle tingle when applied but my skin looked smooth and glowy.

3. Fermented Hyaluronic Acid Serum: Hyaluronic acid is one of my favorite skincare ingredients. It’s a humectant so that means it  pulls moisture from the air into your skin. Ferver’s fermented hyaluronic acid serum claims to penetrate 10 times deeper. Leaving you with your plumpest skin yet. Let me tell you, this claim is accurate! My skin felt so hydrated, soft, and plump after applying it. It’s thicker than other hyaluronic acids that I’ve  tried. I could tell by the texture alone that it was going to be a winner.

4. Fermented Collagen Serum: Collagen is an ingredient that I don’t have much experience using so I wanted to add it to my routine. It’s known to provide the skin with elasticity, strength, and structure. This serum is supposed to provide 2 times more collagen replenishment than normal collagen. Its also made with organ, macadamia, and coconut derivatives to give your skin a smooth glow. I haven’t used it long enough to speak to the increased elasticity or strength of my skin but it definitely left my skin feeling good.

5. Fermented Peptide Restoring Night Cream: My skin is always so dry during the winter so it’s important that I use a rich moisturizer, especially at night. The formulation of fermented peptide, jojoba, and raspberry seed oil provides just that. It’s rich but not oily.  It does a great job locking in the moisture from the other products. By morning, my skin still feels moisturized!

Final Thoughts

I’m new to the fermented skincare game. At least to skincare that is explicitly labeled as fermented. I wasn’t sure what to expect. I feel like there’s so many trends that don’t live up to the hype but I am truly loving these products! My favorites so far are the cleanser, hyaluronic acid, and the moisturizer. If I had to repurchase any of them, it would be those 3.

I want to get my hands on the other 5 products though, so when I do, I’ll be sure to write a  follow up post.

You can find Ferver Skincare at Ferverskincare.com and Target.
