Taking care of your natural hair doesn’t have to be complicated. Building a natural hair regimen can help simplify your routine and get you on track to healthier hair. Here are 5 easy steps to help get you started.
1. Figure Out your hair type
This does not mean just finding out your curl pattern (type 2, 3, or 4). It means finding out your curl pattern, porosity, density, and texture. All four of these things can help you to determine what to look for in the products you use. They’ll also give you a good starting point to building your natural hair regimen.
2. use the right products for your natural hair REgimen
Taking care of your natural hair doesn’t have to involve using a ton of products. Once you figure out your hair type as outlined above, you’ll be able to more easily decide what products to purchase and keep in your collection. Having go-to products will also reduce the number of products you purchase.
While I’ve tried and tested a number of brands during the course of my natural hair journey, there are a few that stand out the most. Some of my favorite natural hair care brands are The Doux, Camille Rose Naturals, Curlmix, LUS Brands, Adwoa Beauty, Miche Beauty and Bask and Bloom.

3. create a schedule that works for you
There’s quite a bit of debate on how often you should wash your natural hair. Just like the products you use depends on your hair type, so does your natural hair wash day schedule. Some people wash and deep condition their hair weekly, others deep condition biweekly. The frequency in which you do so depends on what your hair needs.
If you style your hair in ways that cause a lot of product buildup, washing weekly may be better for you. However, if you often wear your hair in protective styles, washing every other week may be more beneficial. When it comes to deep conditioning, they should be used to address hair concerns. Using a rinse out conditioner will suffice between deep conditioning sessions. We’ll discuss that more later though.
4. get rid of the SPLIT ends
Just like it’s important to create a wash day routine that works for you, so is getting rid of the split ends. Many people will sacrifice the health of their to hold on to length. However, keeping split ends will only cause the split to continue to travel up the hair strand. This in turn will compromise the overall health of your hair.
No matter if you choose to trim your own ends or see a professional, doing so in regular intervals can help prevent the split ends from wreaking havoc.
5. Be gentle with your natural hair
Detangling, styling, and manipulating your natural hair should all be done with great care. Natural hair can be fragile and is especially prone to breakage when wet. While you are discovering what styles you prefer, what products work best for you, and establishing a routine, remember to be gentle.
There are several hair tools that help with this such as the Felicia Leatherwood detangling brush and the Kazmalaje paddle brush and comb.
I know there’s a ton of information available regarding how to care for natural hair, but following these 5 easy steps can get you on the right track to building your own natural hair regimen!
