Prioritizing Your Wellness as a Stay at Home Mom is Essential

Burnout as a stay-at-home mom is real, even when it isn’t the holiday season. For me though, the holidays can be a lot. I’m naturally an introvert and being around too many people for too long overwhelms me. I love spending quality time with myself. Something that’s rare now that I’m a mama.

Nonetheless, I’ve vowed to take my personal wellness more seriously and make it a priority. As a stay-at-home mom, it’s essential that you learn how to take care of yourself and continue doing things that are independent of your child(ren) and significant other. Prioritizing my wellness is one of those things for me.

5 wellness tips for stay at home moms

1. Hydration and Cleansing

During the holidays we often indulge a bit more in sugary (and for some, alcoholic) beverages. To help boost hydration, start your morning off by drinking water. Drink plenty of it throughout the day as well o help flush toxins from your body. If you’d like to also help aid digestion, you can squeeze a bit of lemon juice into warm water to help get things moving.

My favorite thing to drink to aid in boosting hydration is flavored water with electrolytes. A drink like Liquid I.V. helps make this easy since it comes in powder form, a variety of flavors, and sugar-free options. Liquid I.V. also has offers immunity and energy boosting varieties! Both of which we need to stay healthy and alert as stay-at-home moms. You can use this link to check it out and the code “sodazzling” at checkout to save 15%!

No matter how you choose to consume it, drinking plenty of water throughout the day helps rid the body of toxins and helps to cleanse us from the inside out.

2. Nutrient-rich meals

Along with staying hydrated, another wellness tip for stay at home moms is to focus on nutrient-rich meals. Being at home means having access to all the foods and snacks that are kept in the pantry and fridge. Stocking up on nutrient-dense ingredients and snacks like whole fruits, vegetables (fresh, frozen, or canned), lean proteins, and whole grains can help ensure that you feed your body what it needs.

Using these ingredients to prepare meals that are high in antioxidants and fiber-rich can help support the body’s natural detoxification system. This is important, especially after the holidays, to balance ourselves out after all of the holiday season goodies.

I’ve rounded up my favorite nutrient-rich meals that are easy to prepare over on Pinterest. If your baby is anything like mine and eats what you eat, many of these meals are also toddler friendly. There are both meat and meatless options!

3. Mindful Movement and Exercise

As a stay-at-home mom, it’s easy to forget to exercise. It is for me at least. I see my home as a place of relaxation so it’s hard for me to want to workout at home. However, my goal this post-holiday season is to get moving again.

One of my favorite ways to do this has been by watching YouTube Videos. I created a playlist for postpartum workouts that you can do at home. No workout equipment needed! I’ve found that on the days where I practice mindful movement and exercise, I feel much better. My motivation increases and so does my over all wellbeing.

I know, first-hand, that as stay at home moms we have a lot of opportunities to look at ourselves in the mirror. There are days where we may not like what we see. However, by moving your body daily, you’ll start to not only feel better but look better too!

4. Digital Detox and Mental Wellness

This is probably my favorite wellness tip for stay-at-home moms. I find myself scrolling on social media quite a bit and depending on the type of content you can consume, it can be a lot. I’m in a Facebook group for stay at home moms and a mom posted about how she was feeling less than others during the holidays. She felt this way because she had been scrolling on Instagram and saw how many gifts other parents had gotten their kids. She felt like she hadn’t done enough.

Thankfully, everyone in the group was there to remind her that she did what she could, she did her best, and that’s what truly matters at the end of the day.

With the rise in social media, and people sharing their everyday lives, it’s easy to get caught up in wanting to keep up with them. However, it’s important to know that social media is curated. People let you see what they want and everything may not be as it seems.

To protect your mental wellness as a stay at home mom, unplug from the things that trigger you. Be it social media, overconsumption of television, or the constant use of your phone. Some things you can do instead are reading, journaling, or practicing mindfulness through meditation to help promote mental well-being.

5. QUALITY SLEEP AND RELAXATION

Quality sleep can be hard to come by, especially when you have a younger baby. However, it’s essential for overall health and wellness. I vividly remember the days when I was up all night with my son, especially when he was cluster feeding. To say I was exhausted is an understatement. Combining that with the holiday season was probably one of the roughest times for me as a stay at home, and mom in general.

Now that he’s older, it’s easier for me to find moments for quality sleep and relaxation. The days where my husband is also home, I have him takeover our daily parenting duties so that I can sleep in, run errands, or do whatever else I feel will help me relax.

Not only will quality sleep help you recharge from all the running around during the holidays, but adequate sleep also helps support the body’s detoxification processes. If you don’t already have one, developing a bedtime routine that fits within your schedule as a stay at home mom can help improve your sleep quality. I’ve been using my Hatch Restore to make sure I stick to mine.
