5 Quick and Easy Protective Styles For Natural Hair

Having natural hair is such a beautiful experience. It’s versatile and can be done in so many ways but we must also protect it from the elements. Protective styles for natural hair don’t always have to be complicated. In this post, I’m sharing five styles that are both popular and easy for you to try the next time your hair needs a break.

1. Mini Twists

To achieve mini twists you simply section your hair into small sections and install two-strand twists. The smaller the twists, the longer it will take to install. I tend to keep them medium-sized like those in the featured image. This style can last between 1-2 weeks, or longer, depending on the products used.

2. Halo Twists With a Bun

This is one of my favorite styles. It consists of parting your hair straight down the middle, or a side part, and installing a flat twist on each side. To jazz it up you can wrap a piece of thread around the twists. For me, this style lasts between 3-5 days.

3. Mini Braids

Mini braids are similar to mini twists. After parting your hair in small sections, you plait or install single braids. If you prefer elongation, mini braids may be the perfect style for you as they allow your hair to hang longer than mini twists. I also find mini braids a little easier to style.

4. Flat Twists

If you don’t know how to cornrow, flat twists are a great alternative. There are so many ways to do them. You can do a simple style like the halo twists shown above or you can do a flat twist updo. The possibilities are truly endless when it comes to styling flat twists.

5. Headwrap

If you just don’t feel like doing anything fancy or you want to protect your style from the elements, wearing a headwrap can do just that. Not all wraps are created equal though. The material of the headwrap you wear makes all the difference in how well it can protect your hair. Wraps made of cotton can cause your hair to dry out because cotton absorbs moisture. Your hair can also potentially rub up against the wrap causing friction which can lead to breakage. Wraps made of silk or satin are the most protective as they do not dry out the hair or cause friction. Some of my favorite scarves are from SwirlyCurlyHair.Com.
