Since moving back to the United States, things have been pretty hectic. Trying to get our home together, traveling to see family, and taking care of our 6 month old have all led to me not eating very well. I was constantly eating frozen or heavily processed meals. It quickly became my go to because because it was just easy to do. However, it took a toll on my body and well-being. I decided to start a meal service subscription. The one I’m currently trying out is Blue Apron. As a disclaimer, the reason I chose Blue Apron is because I initially had a one-time collaboration with them and I absolutely loved the meals the sent me. I signed up for a paid subscription soon after.

So far I’ve received one week worth of meals. My second is on the way! Here’s what I’ve tried so far and my thoughts.

Week 1

The first meal I made from my Blue Apron subscription was Hot Italian Sausage Pasta with Broccoli and rosemary breadcrumbs. In the app I rated this meal 3 stars. While I liked the idea of the pasta, it just wasn’t saucy enough and the flavor wasn’t completely there. Seasoning the sausage a little better definitely would’ve helped the flavor shine through. As far as the sauce, if it was a little creamier, it would’ve gotten 5 stars from me.

The second meal I made was pork and ramen noodles. BOMB! This meal right here was my favorite of the week. Living in Japan made me super biased toward ramen. I enjoy ramen with a nice flavorful broth. This ramen included a soy glaze and it was *chef’s kiss*. In the app I rated it 5 stars and even saved the recipe so I can attempt to make it on my own should it not be offered again.

The third and final meal i made for the week was chipotle chicken and pinto beans. This meal pleasantly surprised me because I’m not the biggest pinto bean fan. However, my goal with trying Blue Apron is also trying things I usually don’t eat. I’m so glad I am because the spice from the chicken combined with the creaminess of the pinto beans made for the perfect flavor and texture profile. I also gave this meal 5 stars.

Week 2

For my second week, I only ordered 2 meals. That’s the benefit of the service. You can choose however many meals you’d like or if you don’t want any, you can skip the week completely.

The two meals I’m receiving this week are creamy tomato fettuccine and spicy shrimp lo mein. I’ll be sure to give an update here or in my instagram stories of how I like them.

If you’ve ever tried a meal service let me know which one and how you like(d) it in the comments.
