Coloring your hair is a great way to switch things up. I’ve actually dyed my hair in the past and absolutely loved the results. Unfortunately, I didn’t know how to properly care for my hair afterwards so my hair health took a hit. A great alternative to permanent dye, and an easy way to switch things up often, is using temporary hair color. Here are 3 reasons you should give temporary color a try before permanently dying your hair as well as 2 of my favorite brands!
1. There are so many color options
Say you want your hair to be blue one week and red the next, you can easily make that change using temporary hair color. The two brands I mention below can both be washed out with just one wash. This makes it easy to transition from one color to another. Also, having so many color options allows you to mix colors as well. I typically like to use two colors that go well together to create an ombre effect.
2. Temporary Hair color is non-damaging
Since you are not altering the bonds in your hair, temporary color doesn’t damage the hair shaft. There is no bleach, ammonia, or hydrogen peroxide in many temporary hair color products. Therefore, you will not experience any lightening. If you have curly hair, your curl pattern should not be affected by temporary color either.
3. There are many types of temporary color
Temporary color comes in many types. There’s gel, chalk, spray, wax, creme and even powder. The type of color you use depends on your preference and the hairstyle you’ll be wearing. Sine I only use temporary hair color while my hair is in its naturally curly state, I opt for gel. This way I can style my hair with the product and get great definition.
My 3 favorite TEMPORARY DYE brands
Curlsmith
First is the Hair Makeup by Curlsmith. I purchased the colors copper and ruby some time ago. I actually used copper recently and OMG! It is so pretty. I was a little nervous because I wasn’t sure how well it would show up on my dark naturally curly hair. To my surprise, it’s very pigmented!
I love this temporary hair color because it’s in gel form so it works well to set your style. Be it a wash and go or 3-strand twist out like in the video below. It is also extremely easy to wash off your hands.
The one thing I will say is that when I was taking my hair down, the color flaked on my shirt quite a bit. However, I was able to easily clean it up with a lint roller. I just recommend that you don’t wear white when taking your style down.
Gemini NAturals
The other brand that I love is called Gemini Naturals. My favorite part about this brand is that they specifically make temporary hair color. Like, that’s what they’re known for. An added bonus is that it is a Black-owned brand. The first time I tried it, I did experience quite a bit of color fall out. But let me tell you, their customer service is amazing! The owner saw my initial video and sent me their curl primer and their hair oil. That truly made a huge difference.
She offers an array of colors and the color pay off on dark hair is bomb! I didn’t even have to use a ton of the color.
Like Curlsmith, it’s super easy to wash off of your hands and clean up. Both brands do a really good job with the color washing out in one wash, too.

CROWN PAINT COLORS
The third brand that I love is called Crown Paint Colors. What sets this brand apart from other temporary hair color brands is that is cream based, not wax or gel. She offers a huge selection of colors. From neons to neutrals, she has just about every color you can think of.
It did take me a little bit more effort to wash this color out. I had to shampoo my hair about 3 times before it all came out.
The other thing is that I experienced the most color fall out with this brand. Despite that being the case, the color pay off on dark hair is great and it lasts a long time. You can check out my full YouTube review below.
Other temporary hair color brands
While I haven’t tried hair color from these brands personally, I’ve heard that they work very well on natural hair.
- As I Am Curl Color – available on their website and online at Target, this is a temporary hair color made specifically for curl types 3 and 4.
- CurlMix Color Wax – I absolutely love CurlMix and have several videos about their products on YouTube but have yet to try their Color Wax. I’ve heard nothing but great things though! You can find it on their website.
- ORS Curls Unleashed Colorblast – Also available online at Target, the ORS colorblast is known for having great color pay off, even on dark hair.
How long does temporary hair dye last?
Temporary hair dyes that I’ve tried have lasted me a week. They could possibly last longer depending upon how you maintain and style your hair. However long you wear them, the best part is that they wash out very easily.
If you’re looking to dye your hair, trying a temporary color first is beneficial if you’re not yet ready to commit to something permanent. With so many options on the market, I’m sure you’ll find one that works for your natural hair!
